Should I Stop Looking at Homes During the Virus? Everyone has a different take on COVID-19; some are freaking out more than others and some are just taking precautions while others are throwing caution to the wind. I feel we have to fall somewhere in the middle of all of that. But, people still need to buy and sell real estate so are you nervous about looking at homes during this virus outbreak? Are you putting your home buying needs aside until this blows over? Should you stop looking at homes during the virus outbreak?
While the federal government has really banned gatherings of 50 people or more in most places and shut down schools and restaurants, the one on one meeting that many buyers have with their agent should remain fairly safe. We take all the necessary precautions with our agents by simply washing hands, using hand sanitizer, and sterilizing any and all services, writing utensils and documents as much as possible.
There are some things you can do when looking at homes to protect yourself, as well as, those whose homes you’ve entered.
Keep sanitary wipes, Lysol, and/or hand sanitizer ready to go in the car. From touching door handles, door knobs, faucets, and closet doors to getting back in vehicles and browsing homes, having that hand sanitizer ready to go and not touching your face while you’re visiting the home is a great way to protect yourself.
Ask the listing agent to have the homeowner gone at least 30 minutes prior to your visit. This will ensure that any and all viruses that are still floating in the air have safely drifted to the floor.
Have the homeowners sterilize all of their own services or cancel any open houses and showings if they had any signs of sickness in the past week or two.
Be cautious of your own symptoms. Anytime you have a dry cough, fatigue, fever or shortness of breath, you should either stay home or if you’re really concerned, take one of the tests from a drive-up clinic but please, don’t call your agent to come to look at houses just because you have a lot of extra time on your hands being self quarantined.
Prepare for the purchase. Now is a good time to shop for the best home loan, lender, and browse houses. Make sure you’ve already pre-applied for a home loan so that you are issued a preapproval letter stating you’re qualified to purchase the home. All of this can be done online, over email, and electronically.
We need to be cautious and smart about this but it doesn’t mean that everything in our lives needs to be put on hold. If you’re looking at homes, need access to local lenders or online lenders, or would like to browse a home, contact our office today.
