Originally called Bethlehem back in 1837 because the settlers were predominantly Quakers, Carmel got its name in 1874 and in 1924 one of the first automatic traffic signals in the US was installed at the intersection of Main Street and Rangeline Road. There are several historical places such as the Carmel Monon Depot, John Kinzer House, and Thornehurst Addition, all registered with the National Register of Historic Places.
Carmel has its own school district called the Carmel Clay School District, which maintains 11 elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school. There are over 14,000 students currently enrolled. There are several private schools as well including the Pilgrim Lutheran Preschool, St. Elizabeth Seton preschool, Midwest Academy, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic school, Walnut Grove Christian school, and University high school.
Carmel is the headquarters for CNO Financial Group, Miso, and Delta faucet as well as several branches of major industries such as Geico and Liberty Mutual employing hundreds of local residents.
Carmel is known for several farmers markets, parks and recreational facilities, trails, a vibrant arts and design district, festivals, gardens and more. The Carmel city center is a 1 million square-foot mixed-use development in the heart of the city. It’s home to the Palladium at the Center for Performing Arts and a pedestrian base master-planned development located at the southwest corner of City Center Drive and Rangeline Road.
