Greenfield was originally a stop along the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis railroad the connected Pittsburgh to Chicago and St. Louis. The city was incorporated in 1876 and growth began shortly thereafter when natural gas was discovered in the area. Today, several homes are part of the National Register of Historic Places and the town boasts the Riley Festival every October with a children’s parade and statue honoring James Whitcomb Riley, one of the best-selling authors to ever come out of Indiana. Naturally, the Riley house is listed as the National Register of Historic Places.
Greenfield is part of the Greenfield Central community school Corporation, which serves the city of Greenfield and surrounding areas in central Hancock County. There are four elementary schools, two intermediate schools for grades 4 through 6, one junior high, and one high school. The high school is the newest built in the late 2000’s to accommodate Greenfield’s rapidly growing population.
Greenfield has a vibrant parks and recreational department that has dozens of open spaces, nature preserves, trails, and parkland throughout the city.
