It is one of the four “excluded cities” in Marion County. Unigov is the colloquial name adopted by the cities of Indianapolis Indiana to describe consolidated city county governments. Lawrence is an excluded city, which means they retain government autonomy in most respects. Lawrence elects their own city officials and city councils and are represented on the city Council Council and vote for the mayor of Indianapolis so property taxes and government rulings are slightly different than other cities in Marion County. The city of Beech Grove, Speedway, and Southport are also considered excluded cities. Citizens vote not only for the mayor and the Council of Lawrence but also for Indianapolis as well.
The Lawrence Township school district is the ninth largest and one of the fastest growing in the state of Indiana. There are four early learning centers, 11 elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. There’s also a center for innovation and technology and an alternative high school. Several famous basketball players and actors have come out of Lawrence including Forrest Landis and Greg Oden.
Housing, cost of living, utilities, health, and transportation are all lower in Lawrence then the national average making it a wonderful place to call home. As of the publishing of this page, Lawrence was an extremely hot real estate market with an average home value of about $200,000.
