When it comes to selling homes, the one that appeals to most buyers and what they want and must-have in a home sells faster and for more money. There are many attributes about homes on the market that draw buyers. Some of these are as big as having a huge kitchen and some are as simple as a color scheme. That’s right, the colors you paint your home can help it to sell for more money.
Zillow recently conducted a study about the effect of paint colors on home sales. They took a look at pictures of homes sold over a period of time and took notice of similar color trends and what those homes sold for. They looked at over 135,000 photos of homes around the country to determine if paint colors really make a difference as compared to homes painted white. Your Home Could Sell for More If It Was This Color
Here is What they Found:
Homes with Black or Charcoal Gray Front Doors Sell for about $6,271 Higher than Expected: This is the highest paint color money-grabber of the study.
Tuxedo Kitchens Sell for $1,547 Higher: What is a tuxedo kitchen? It is a kitchen with darker lower cabinets and lighter upper cabinets. The most popular of tuxedo kitchen color schemes were those with white cabinets contrasted by a black or dark navy blue island.
Baby Blue Bathrooms: This one may come as a bit of a surprise to some, but light blue bathrooms were loved by home buyers to the tune of bringing in a whopping $2,786 more dollars. To be at the top of this trend consider periwinkle blue to be exact.
Taupe Living Rooms are Worth About $2,793 More: What color is taupe? Well it’s kind of like a warm light brown or the color of khaki pants with pink or peach undertones.
Are There Paint Colors that Deter Buyers?
There most certainly are. You actually could probably imagine what you would want from your next house and there is probably a color you could think of right away that you would not want that home painted.
The study also found that some paint colors have a negative effect on home-sale success. Here is what they found:
Don’t Paint the Kitchen Red: painting the kitchen red was found to drop the price of a home by $2,310
Though Yellow is Bright and Cheery, It’s Not the Most Popular on the Outside of a House: The brightest of yellow colors, warm yellows with brown undertones, and goldenrod/flax type of yellows are all bringing a home price down by $3,408
Brown Dining Rooms are Not Loved: This warm hue is not bringing warm feelings when it comes to the dining room. It lowers a home price by $1,684
So if you are hoping to sell a home for top dollar, go paint that front door black or dark grey. It will only cost around $100-$400, but it could bring in thousands.
